The Reality of the DSA in Power: How Mamdani and the Professional Managerial Class Handed Anti-Genocide Protesters Over to the NYPD

The September 2026 United Nations General Assembly in New York City laid bare a profound political reality that every socialist, anti-zionist, and anti-imperialist must confront without illusion. While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu—a war criminal wanted by the International Criminal Court for ongoing genocide in Gaza—was granted a global platform to spew genocidal vitriol, the streets outside told a vastly different story. Thousands of anti-genocide demonstrators mobilized to make their voices heard, only to be met with the iron fist of state repression.

Tragically and predictably, this repression was not orchestrated by a conventional right-wing machine alone, but was overseen and enforced by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani—a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). The events of that week serve as a devastating case study in the bankruptcy of "democratic socialism" in power, illustrating how the professional-managerial strata grouped within the DSA function as a left cover for the capitalist state, imperialist foreign policy, and domestic class rule.

The Repression of Protesters by the Mamdani Administration

Outside the heavily fortified UN headquarters, more than 1,000 demonstrators mobilized in a powerful series of anti-genocide actions organized by grassroots coalitions, including Jewish Voice for Peace and the Palestinian Youth Movement. Ahead of Netanyahu’s speech, a courageous, peaceful sit-in on First Avenue attempted to disrupt the mass murderer's motorcade and register absolute moral and political rejection of his presence.

Instead of welcoming this fierce defense of Palestinian lives, the municipal government unleashed a heavy police response. The New York Police Department (NYPD)—operating under Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, a holdover from the Eric Adams administration whom Mamdani chose to retain—deployed its most notorious units. Officers from the Strategic Response Group (SRG), the brutal "anti-terrorism" and crowd-control unit infamous for terrorizing student encampments at Columbia University and City College, waded into the crowds.

With hands zip-tied behind their backs, more than 100 people were arrested and loaded onto police buses. Among those targeted by the NYPD were high-profile public figures, actors such as Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder, and progressive elected officials, including DSA City Council members. The deployment of the SRG carries an extra layer of political betrayal: during his campaign, Mamdani had explicitly vowed to disband this very unit. Once safely ensconced in City Hall, however, that electoral promise was quietly jettisoned in favor of maintaining "law and order" for the ruling class.

Political Betrayal and the Role of the "Pseudo-Left"

The sharpest condemnation of these events comes from recognizing the staggering political hypocrisy on display. Just three days prior to the UN showdown, Mayor Mamdani hosted the fascist former U.S. President Donald Trump at Gracie Mansion for a cordial meeting and press conference, ostensibly discussing real estate and development deals that would line the pockets of corporate cronies. While Trump used his subsequent UN address to threaten the total "annihilation" of Iran, Mamdani made no meaningful political challenge to the broader architecture of U.S. imperialism.

Instead, while shaking hands with billionaire-friendly fascists in private, Mamdani oversaw the brutal policing and mass arrests of anti-genocide protesters in public. Though Mamdani issued a belated, boilerplate written statement criticizing Netanyahu's speech as an attempt to "sanitize his genocide," his words rang hollow against the backdrop of police buses hauling away anti-war activists.

For an anti-capitalist audience, this duality is entirely characteristic of the pseudo-left. Reformist "progressive" and "democratic socialist" politicians in power inevitably act as managers of the capitalist state. When push comes to shove, they do not dismantle the institutions of state violence; they utilize its repressive apparatus—the police departments, the anti-terror units, and the municipal courts—against the very working-class and anti-imperialist movements that created the political openings for their rise.

The Bankruptcy of "Democratic Socialism" in Power

The events surrounding the 2026 UN General Assembly expose a fundamental truth long understood by revolutionary Marxism: the capitalist state cannot be reformed from within; it must be smashed.

When reformists and middle-class careerists enter bourgeois municipal governments under the banner of "socialism," they quickly discover that the levers of power are tethered directly to Wall Street, Washington, and the military-industrial complex. Electing reformists into bourgeois institutions does not lead to the dismantling of police forces or the disruption of imperialist foreign policy. Instead, it leads to the left-wing management of state repression.

The DSA and its elected officials function precisely as a left cover for the capitalist state. By dressing up municipal administration in radical rhetoric while capitulating entirely to the demands of capital and empire, they demobilize independent working-class struggle. When DSA city council members and organizational leaders can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with an administration that zip-ties anti-genocide demonstrators—offering no principled criticism of the mayor's collaboration with Trump or his police crackdowns—they demonstrate that their primary allegiance is to the preservation of bourgeois political stability, not international liberation.

Lessons for the Anti-Imperialist Struggle

The struggle against imperialist war, state violence, and the genocide in Palestine cannot be outsourced to career politicians, municipal elections, or the "progressive" wing of the Democratic Party apparatus. The events in New York City are a stern warning to anti-zionists, anti-imperialists, and socialists everywhere: those who seek to manage the capitalist state will ultimately become instruments of its violence.

True solidarity requires a complete break with electoral reformism and the illusions of "democratic socialism" through bourgeois institutions. The working class and the anti-war movement must organize independently, relying on their own class power, mass direct action, and international working-class solidarity—unfettered by the betrayal of mayors, police commissioners, and the pseudo-left managers of the capitalist order.
