The Only Path is Third-Party: Why Working People Need an Independent Voice

The political landscape of the 21st century is increasingly defined by a paradox: while the vast majority of the population faces a cost-of-living crisis, crumbling infrastructure, and the looming threat of global war, the two-party system remains unshakably committed to the interests of the billionaire class. For socialists, anti-imperialists, and the broader working class, the central question is no longer whether the system is broken, but how we build the vehicle to replace it.

The historical evidence provided by the "sheepdogging" phenomenon—whereby "progressive" figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez channel radical energy back into the Democratic Party—demonstrates that the "inside-outside" strategy is a cul-de-sac. To achieve genuine liberation, working people must chart a third-party path, independent of corporate funding and imperialist logic.

The Trap of the "Lesser Evil"

For decades, the working class has been held hostage by the logic of "lesser-evilism." This strategy dictates that no matter how far to the right the Democratic Party moves, workers must support it to prevent a "greater evil." However this has only resulted in a "ratchet effect."

  • Policy Convergence: On the most fundamental issues—military spending, support for the Israeli occupation of Palestine, and the preservation of the capitalist market—there is no meaningful daylight between the two major parties.

  • The Facilitation of War: Both parties have overseen the expansion of the U.S. military-industrial complex and the "perpetual war machine," regardless of which administration holds the White House.

  • Austerity for the Poor, Subsidies for the Rich: While social programs are gutted under the guise of fiscal responsibility, billions are effortlessly found for bank bailouts and foreign military interventions.

The Myth of "Reforming" the Democratic Party

The campaigns of the "Democratic Socialists" within the party were supposed to "push the Democrats to the left." Instead, the party has pushed these individuals to the right. We have seen self-described socialists vote for massive military budgets and fail to take a principled stand against the genocide in Gaza or the provocations against Iran.

This isn't just a failure of individual character; it is a structural reality. The Democratic Party is a corporate-controlled institution designed to absorb and neutralize dissent. As Ajamu Baraka has argued, the party serves as the "graveyard of social movements."

Why Independence is a Necessity, Not an Option

A genuine third party—a Workers' Party—is not merely about winning elections in the short term; it is about building a permanent infrastructure for class struggle.

  1. Breaking the Corporate Monopoly: A party that refuses a single dime from corporate PACs is the only entity capable of proposing policies that actually benefit the majority, such as universal healthcare, guaranteed housing, and the nationalization of the energy sector to combat climate change.

  2. A Consistent Anti-Imperialist Voice: An independent party can unequivocally oppose the "psychopathology of white supremacy" and the colonial projects in West Asia without being beholden to the AIPAC-funded leadership of the Democratic National Committee.

  3. Building Power in the Streets and Workplaces: Unlike the Democrats, who only mobilize voters every two or four years, a revolutionary third-party acts as a coordinator for strikes, rent boycotts, and anti-war protests, linking the economic struggle to the political struggle.

Beyond the Ballot Box

The path to a third party is not easy. It requires overcoming restrictive ballot access laws and the relentless propaganda of the corporate media. Yet, as the legitimacy of the two-party system evaporates, the space for a radical alternative grows.

Working people do not need a "seat at the table" of a dying empire. They need their own table. By breaking the umbilical cord to the Democratic Party and the capitalist class, we can finally begin the work of building a society based on human need, international solidarity, and the total abolition of exploitation.
