Supporting The NATO-Induced Proxy War: Pseudo Socialist, Bernie Sanders, Critiques Donald Trump’s Ukraine War Policy from the Right

For decades, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont has been marketed to the American public as the standard-bearer of "democratic socialism"—a fiery populist fighting against the "billionaire class." Yet, when the imperial interests of the United States capital-state are on the line, Sanders routinely sheds his populist rhetoric to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Pentagon, NATO, and the military-industrial complex.

Nowhere is this ideological betrayal clearer than in Sanders' relentless support for the NATO-induced proxy war in Ukraine. Rather than opposing the horrific slaughter of Ukrainian and Russian workers or demanding an immediate diplomatic resolution, Sanders has functioned as one of the war machine's most reliable cheerleaders. Most glaringly, Sanders has taken to critiquing the Trump administration’s foreign policy from the right, attacking Donald Trump for failing to funnel arms quickly enough to fuel the ongoing conflict.

Social Democracy’s Bargain with the Imperial State

Sanders is a textbook case of how social democracy, far from being a vehicle for revolutionary transformation, operates as an ideological pillar of the capitalist state. Historically, social democrats have made a calculated (Faustian) bargain with imperialism: they are permitted to advocate for domestic social reforms—such as "Medicare for All" or "Taxing the Rich"—only on the condition that they remain strictly compliant with the empire's global hegemony, resource plunder, and militarism.

When social democrats accept the framework of the capitalist state, their domestic promises become empty slogans. The ruling class allows social-democratic figures to channel popular discontent back into the safe confines of electoral politics, while simultaneously leveraging their "left" credibility to manufacture consent for imperialist wars abroad.

By equating "socialism" with the expansion of the Scandinavian-style capitalist welfare state—backed by NATO's military shield—Sanders distorts and perverts the very definition of socialist politics. Genuine socialism is rooted in internationalism, anti-imperialism, and the abolition of class exploitation. A "socialism" that votes to fund Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and NATO expansion is not socialism at all; it is imperialist chauvinism with a progressive mask.

The Social Media Exchange: Critiquing Trump from the Right

The fundamental pro-war orientation of Sanders was put on full display following recent reporting on Washington's military aid posture.

On October 20, 2026, The Washington Post posted a breaking story on X (formerly Twitter):

@WaPo:"Breaking news: The Trump administration has not approved the transfer of interceptor missiles to Ukraine that are needed to protect the country from Russian attacks, officials said, a delay that comes as President Trump has embraced Russia in recent weeks."

Rather than seizing upon any delay in arms transfers to demand de-escalation, Sanders reacted with belligerent imperialist outrage. On October 21, 2026, Sanders posted his response:

@SenSanders:"Disgraceful. Trump sacrifices Ukrainian lives in order to appease his fellow authoritarian, Mr. Putin. The U.S. must release the transfer of interceptor missiles to Ukraine. No U.S. alliance with the Russian dictatorship."

Here, the self-proclaimed "socialist" senator explicitly outflanked the Republican administration from the right, demanding that the imperial state accelerate its transfer of high-tech weaponry into a war zone.

The Backlash: Left-Wing Anti-War Voices Respond

Sanders' pro-war post triggered immediate backlash from anti-imperialist commentators, journalists, and activists who exposed his hypocrisy.

Journalist Glenn Greenwald highlighted the financial reality of Sanders' stance:

@ggreenwald:"Mr. Socialist -- Mr. Let's Rebel Against the Millionaires and Billionaires -- wants to send hundreds of billions of dollars in Americans' money not to American communities to improve the lives of American workers, but to Raytheon and Boeing to keep fueling the war in Ukraine."

The Grayzone's editor, Max Blumenthal, pointed to Sanders' long-standing record of militarism in his home state of Vermont:

@maxblumenthal:"Antiwar activists in Vermont know Bernie as the senator who pushed with all his might to station nuclear capable F-35s at Burlington Int’l Airport. This militaristic screed would come as no surprise to them."

A young voter named, Landon, succinctly captured the incompatibility between socialism and NATO proxy wars:

@IamLandon_9:"Supporting Ukraine is not democratic socialism".

Analyst Patrick Henningsen stripped away Sanders' progressive pretenses:

@21WIRE:*"More proof that Bernie Sanders works for the war party. What a complete idiot, another glorified agent for the NATO arms racket - who still wants to give the Little Green Goblin in Kiev a blank check forever until there’s no more Ukraine left: “Let’s fight Russia right down to the last Ukrainian!” The brain dead Left…" *

A Long Track Record of Imperialist Compliance

Sanders' stance on Ukraine is no anomaly; it is the continuation of a decades-long record of backing U.S. interventionism.

As detailed extensively by the World Socialist Web Site, Sanders has voted repeatedly for massive Pentagon budget increases, supported the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia, backed the initial 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), and championed the deployment of the nuclear-capable F-35 fighter jet to Vermont to benefit local contractors.

Reporting from The Black Agenda Report emphasizes that figures like Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez function as "sheepdogs" for the Democratic Party. Their role is to keep young, anti-war, and left-leaning workers trapped within the two-party imperialist consensus, preventing the development of an independent socialist movement against war.

This systemic role has been further highlighted by independent media outlets. Analysis from the Revolutionary Blackout Network has repeatedly demonstrated how Sanders and the self-described "Progressive Caucus" capitulate to the Democratic leadership on crucial military funding votes. Similarly, reporting from The Real News Network has cataloged how working-class domestic priorities are continuously sacrificed to sustain global military hegemony. Even mainstream political outlets like The Hill have documented how Sanders uses his platform to shore up bipartisan foreign policy objectives under the banner of "protecting democracy."

Anti-Imperialism and the Rejection of Pseudo-Socialism

The war in Ukraine is not a struggle between "democracy and autocracy," as U.S. state propaganda and Bernie Sanders claim. It is a NATO-induced proxy war, provoked by decades of eastward NATO expansion, engineered to weaken regional rivals and consolidate Washington's geopolitical grip over Europe.

For working-class anti-imperialists, the task is clear: we must unmask pseudo-socialists like Bernie Sanders who lend a "left" cover to imperialist aggression. Social democracy offers no path forward for the global working class. Only an uncompromising, anti-capitalist, and anti-imperialist movement—one that refuses to fire a single shot or spend a single dollar for NATO's war machine—can bring about real liberation.
