Global Demand for Release: The World Watches as Israel Plans to Slowly Murder Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya

In the long, blood-drenched history of imperialist conquest and settler-colonial violence, the frontline of resistance often takes forms that mainstream Western commentary refuses to recognize. It is not merely found in arms, but in the steadfast refusal to abandon the vulnerable, the stubborn maintenance of life where an empire demands death, and the weaponization of human solidarity against a mechanized apparatus of genocide. Today, the global anti-imperialist movement watches a horrifying paradigm of this struggle unfold in the slow, state-sanctioned torture and murder of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya.

Dr. Abu Safiya, a renowned Palestinian pediatrician and the director of the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has become a living symbol of defiance against the Zionist occupation. For over 550 days, he has been held in the dark recesses of the Israeli carceral network, completely stripped of legal rights, insulated from the outside world, and subjected to a sadistically calculated campaign of physical destruction. The latest accounts emerging from his interrogation cell are not merely warnings of medical neglect; they are the frantic dispatches of an impending execution. When his lawyer finally gained access to him in early July 2026, the doctor's message to the world was unvarnished and chilling: “This is the last time you'll see me… they brought me here to kill me.”

For global anti-imperialists, the case of Dr. Abu Safiya is not an isolated human rights infraction or a tragic case of wartime collateral damage. It is a concentrated manifestation of how the Zionist state—backed to the hilt by the financial and military might of Washington, London, and Berlin—deploys the carceral apparatus to systematically decapitate the social, biological, and medical infrastructure of the Palestinian people. The slow murder of Dr. Abu Safiya is a deliberate political objective, designed to signal to all who resist erasure that no one, not even those who heal children, is safe from the vengeful hand of the occupier.

Who is Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya?

To understand why the Israeli state is so fiercely determined to destroy Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, one must understand what he represents. Dr. Abu Safiya is a senior medical consultant and a highly specialized pediatrician whose life’s work has been dedicated to preserving the lives of children in northern Gaza—a region that has endured decades of suffocating blockades, calculated caloric restrictions, and recurrent military onslaughts. As the assault on Gaza intensified, transforming the enclave into an open-air slaughterhouse, Dr. Abu Safiya stepped into the role of director at Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit Lahia.

Under his leadership, Kamal Adwan became more than a medical facility; it became the last redoubt of human dignity in northern Gaza. As the Israeli military systematically dismantled neighboring hospitals, cut off electricity, and blocked the entry of essential medical supplies, Dr. Abu Safiya and his team performed miracles with nothing. They managed to expand the hospital's capacity, keeping neonatal incubators running on the absolute margins of fuel reserves, and treating horrifying blast injuries, complex surgical traumas, and acute, blockade-induced malnutrition simultaneously.

Dr. Abu Safiya refused to let the tragedy of Gaza happen in silence. He weaponized his position to speak directly to the international community, regularly granting harrowing interviews to global media outlets and writing powerful op-eds in the New York Times. He documented the realities of the starvation regime, describing how infants were dying in his arms from a total lack of nutrients, and how the deliberate blocking of basic medicines was transforming treatable conditions into death sentences.

His steadfastness drew the immediate, lethal ire of the occupation forces. The Zionist state operates on the premise that northern Gaza must be entirely ethnically cleansed to facilitate total territorial control. By remaining at his post, Dr. Abu Safiya directly disrupted this narrative of forced expulsion. The occupation attempted to break his spirit through profound personal terror: in late 2024, an Israeli drone strike deliberately targeted and killed his 15-year-old son, Ebrahim. Dr. Abu Safiya was forced to bury his own child within the blood-soaked soil of the Kamal Adwan Hospital compound. Yet, hours after burying his son, he wiped away his tears, put his white medical coat back on, and returned to the intensive care unit to tend to the children of his neighbors. This level of revolutionary resilience is precisely why the occupation views him not as a doctor, but as an existential threat to their colonial project.

The Abduction: Defying the Demands of the Occupation

The final phase of the occupation's campaign against Kamal Adwan Hospital culminated on December 27, 2024. For weeks, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) had surrounded, shelled, and besieged the facility, sniper-firing into the wards and demanding the total evacuation of all staff and patients. International non-governmental organizations and United Nations personnel complied with the evacuation orders, leaving the hospital vulnerable. Dr. Abu Safiya, however, refused to move. He understood that to leave meant signing an immediate death warrant for dozens of intensive care patients, premature newborns, and severely wounded civilians who could not survive transport.

When the military finally stormed the facility, smashing equipment and forcibly displacing the remaining patients, they targeted Dr. Abu Safiya for abduction. A stark, haunting piece of video footage captured on December 24, 2024, stands as the last time the doctor was seen alive by the public. In the video, Dr. Abu Safiya is seen walking down a pulverized, rubble-strewn street, framed by charred skeletons of buildings. He is wearing his immaculate clinician's white coat, walking with absolute posture directly toward a line of Israeli armored vehicles and tanks. He did not run, he did not hide; he met his captors with the absolute dignity of a man who knew his hands were clean and his cause was righteous.

Following this moment, Dr. Abu Safiya was forcibly disappeared into the Israeli carceral archipelago. For months, the state refused to acknowledge his location, provide a record of his arrest, or grant him access to legal counsel. He was categorized under Israel’s draconian "Illegal Combatants Law"—a legal framework explicitly designed to bypass the Geneva Conventions and domestic judicial oversight. Under this law, the state can hold Palestinian detainees indefinitely without bringing forward formal charges, producing evidence, or granting a trial.

The occupation justified this kidnapping by recycling its shopworn, thoroughly debunked propaganda that Kamal Adwan Hospital was a "Hamas stronghold." As international observers and colleagues have noted, this claim is a transparent farce. The criminalization of medical professionals is a psychological warfare tactic designed to rationalize the systematic destruction of Gaza's healthcare infrastructure and strip the population of its collective survival mechanisms.

Behind the Prison Walls

The details of Dr. Abu Safiya’s journey through the Israeli prison system read like a descent into a fascist underworld. He was initially transferred to the Ofer military prison in the occupied West Bank, an institution notorious for its systematic degradation of Palestinian political prisoners. According to documentation compiled by human rights organizations like B'Tselem and Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI), Dr. Abu Safiya was immediately subjected to an intense regime of physical and psychological torture.

Guards subjected the pediatrician to repeated, severe beatings using batons, wooden clubs, and electric shock sticks. He was forcibly stripped naked, tightly shackled by his wrists and ankles until his circulation was compromised, and forced to sit for hours on sharp, sun-baked gravel in agonizing stress positions. He was denied access to basic hygiene, clean water, and adequate food, all while being held in prolonged solitary confinement to induce psychological collapse. Furthermore, despite his captors knowing he suffered from a pre-existing heart condition, he was systematically denied any form of medical monitoring or cardiac medication. Within a matter of months, this brutal regime caused the doctor to lose more than 40 kilograms (nearly 90 pounds) of body mass, leaving his physical frame utterly shattered.

In mid-2025, as the far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir consolidated his grip over the Israel Prison Service, Dr. Abu Safiya was moved to an even more sinister facility: the Rakefet interrogation center inside Nitzan Prison. Rakefet is an underground dungeon originally built in the early 1980s to isolate the most violent elements of organized crime. It was shuttered years ago because its subterranean, windowless construction—which deprives inmates of all natural light, fresh air, and human contact—was deemed too inhumane for even convicted domestic criminals. Under Ben-Gvir's direction, this tomb was brought back into service specifically to break high-profile Palestinian detainees. Held entirely underground, isolated from sunlight, and surrounded by masked guards in heavy tactical gear, Dr. Abu Safiya’s detention transitioned from unlawful imprisonment into an administrative assassination.

The Imminent Threat to Life

The urgency of the current moment cannot be overstated. On July 2, 2026, attorney Nasser Odeh managed to secure a rare, brief visit with Dr. Abu Safiya at the underground Rakefet facility. The report that emerged from that meeting sent shockwaves through international solidarity networks and confirmed that the Israeli state is actively working to ensure the doctor does not survive his captivity.

When Dr. Abu Safiya was brought into the meeting room, he was tightly shackled by both his hands and his feet, escorted by heavily armed, masked guards. Odeh reported that he initially struggled to even recognize the doctor due to the sheer volume of fresh, horrific trauma inflicted upon his body. Dr. Abu Safiya bore severe, deeply discolored contusions and lacerations across his entire head, surrounding his swollen eyes, and lacerating his ears and neck. His son, Elias Abu Safiya, later released a desperate video message confirming that his father had been subjected to targeted beatings using a heavy hammer, leaving his face visibly disfigured.

During the short interview, the doctor was gasping for air, unable to breathe properly due to suspected thoracic injuries from the beatings. He was profoundly weak, trembling, and his torso repeatedly tilted sideways in his chair as he fought to maintain consciousness. His voice was a strained whisper. He described his daily existence as an unimaginable hell, stating that the sheer intensity of the daily violence exceeded anything the human mind could comprehend. It was during this meeting that he issued his final, tragic assessment to his counsel, stating plainly that someone within the highest levels of the Israeli security apparatus had made the executive decision to have him murdered inside the walls of Nitzan Prison.

The judicial track offers no recourse. In June 2026, the Israeli Supreme Court summarily rejected a comprehensive legal appeal for his release submitted by Physicians for Human Rights Israel. Following that rejection, the violence against him was immediately escalated—a clear indication that the prison administration interpreted the court's ruling as a green light to finish their work. The state has continuously deployed bureaucratic delays, requesting extension after extension to avoid answering petitions from international legal bodies, using time as a weapon while the doctor’s internal organs slowly fail under the weight of sustained trauma.

Decapitating Gaza’s Healthcare

To understand this crisis through a strictly humanitarian lens is to completely miss its structural function. The slow murder of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya is an integral component of a broader, calculated imperialist methodology: the total annihilation of the healthcare system as a prerequisite for successful genocidal displacement.

Since October 2023, the Zionist occupation has systematically executed an estimated 1,700 healthcare workers across Gaza. This includes prominent specialists, surgeons, nurses, and laboratory technicians. More than 400 medical professionals have been arbitrarily abducted from hospital wards during military raids. As of mid-2026, at least 83 medical workers remain trapped within the Israeli carceral system under the same lawless conditions as Dr. Abu Safiya, with 23 of those abducted directly from Kamal Adwan Hospital alone. The precedents are terrifying: noted medical figures like Dr. Adnan Al-Bursh, the chief of orthopedic surgery at Al-Shifa Hospital, have already been tortured to death inside Israeli detention facilities.

This systematic slaughter and abduction of medical workers has been directly linked to the occupation's genocidal targeting of Palestinian children. A landmark report issued by the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry explicitly detailed how the deliberate destruction of neonatal, pediatric, and maternity wards has been utilized as a mechanism to prevent births and ensure the long-term biological vulnerability of the Palestinian population. By killing the pediatricians, smashing the incubators, and cutting off nutrition, the occupation ensures that an entire generation of Palestinian children will either die in infancy or suffer permanent, debilitating developmental stunts. Dr. Abu Safiya stood as the primary obstacle to this specific policy in northern Gaza. By removing him, the occupation effectively removed the shield protecting thousands of children from state-enforced death.

Global Mobilization

While Western imperialist governments continue to shield the Zionist regime from accountability, providing the diplomatic cover and weapon shipments necessary to maintain this carceral nightmare, the international working class and anti-imperialist medical professionals have entered into a state of total mobilization. The frantic dispatches regarding Dr. Abu Safiya’s health have ignited a massive wave of grassroots anger across the globe.

In early 2026, the advocacy group Doctors Against Genocide (DAG) spearheaded a global coordinated vigil network under the banner "Sick from Genocide." Tens of thousands of healthcare workers across major metropolitan centers—including New York, San Diego, Detroit, San Francisco, and Montreal—staged massive walkouts and silent demonstrations. In Detroit, when administrators at the Wayne State School of Medicine deployed campus police to aggressively shut down a Doctors Against Genocide press conference, student youth and anti-imperialist organizers stood their ground, pointing out the direct connection between university endowments, corporate health insurance cartels, and the military-industrial complex that profits off the production of the weapons leveling Gaza.

In London, the mobilization has reached an absolute fever pitch. Hundreds of anti-war demonstrators recently shut down traffic outside the Prime Minister’s office at Downing Street, while activists successfully scaled London's iconic Tower Bridge to unfurl a massive Palestinian flag and banners demanding immediate, emergency intervention to save Dr. Abu Safiya's life.

More than 2,500 British National Health Service (NHS) workers signed an emergency petition condemning the complicity of British medical institutions and delivered it directly to the Royal College of Physicians. This courageous mobilization occurred in direct defiance of the British political establishment, which has sought to criminalize medical professionals who wear or display symbols of Palestinian solidarity.

Simultaneously, a broad coalition of prominent cultural figures and artists—including legendary musician Paul Weller, and the radical political bands Primal Scream and Kneecap—released a joint international video broadcast utilizing their platforms to broadcast Dr. Abu Safiya’s final words from prison. Their collective statement cut directly to the core of the anti-imperialist critique:

“This man is a pediatrician. He is the best of us, and yet he and many others are being taken, tortured and murdered by Israel, without charge! If this great man dies on our watch, due to lack of action by our leaders against Israel's impunity, it will be yet another stain on our collective humanity.”

A Line in the Sand for the Global Conscience

The struggle to save Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya is not a request for imperialist charity, nor is it an appeal to the fictional "rules-based international order" managed by the very states funding his torture. It is a line in the sand for the global anti-imperialist movement. It forces a confrontation with the reality of settler-colonialism: a system that cannot tolerate the existence of a Palestinian doctor who heals, because its entire survival hinges on the total dehumanization and destruction of the Palestinian people.

Dr. Abu Safiya represents the absolute pinnacle of revolutionary steadfastness (sumud). He stayed when he was ordered to leave; he healed when he was surrounded by ruins; he chose his patients over his own safety; and he walked toward the enemy’s tanks with his head held high. If the global working class allows this historic figure to be quietly liquidated in an underground cell in Nitzan Prison, it will signal a catastrophic defeat for international solidarity.

The demand must be absolute, unyielding, and militant: the immediate, unconditional release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, the liberation of all 83 detained Palestinian medical workers, and the total dismantling of the fascist carceral apparatus that sustains the Zionist occupation. The world is watching, and the time for passive observation has long since passed. Action must be taken now, at the gates of the factories, in the streets of the imperial capitals, and within the halls of every medical institution, before the occupation succeeds in extinguishing one of the brightest lights of the Palestinian resistance.
