From $5,000 Bribes to Open Death Threats: Lessons from the Fascist Republican Midterm Convention

The Republican Party’s first-ever midterm convention, held in Dallas, Texas, under the banner of a sputtering and besieged administration, laid bare the advanced decay of American bourgeois democracy. Billed as a massive display of political strength, the gathering at the American Airlines Center instead exposed an increasingly desperate ruling class turning openly toward fascism, political violence, and the dismantling of democratic norms. For socialists, anti-imperialists, and anti-capitalists, the spectacle in Dallas is a stark warning: as the capitalist system plunges deeper into economic and social crisis, the ruling elite is discarding the veneer of democratic governance in favor of naked reaction.

A Convention of Desperation and Empty Seats

Despite Donald Trump’s grandiose claims that the arena was packed with supporters waiting outside, the reality inside told a very different story. Entire seating sections were shrouded under dark tarps, and the upper tiers remained largely empty. The Republican National Committee struggled desperately to fill the venue, resorting to free ticket lotteries and unsolicited text message blasts across the Dallas area.

This sparse attendance was a direct reflection of a cratering political base. With Trump’s approval ratings plumbing historical lows—dipping to roughly 33 percent—and most battleground House Republicans avoiding the event entirely, the convention laid bare the isolation of the party leadership. Millions of workers and young people are filled with mass anger over skyrocketing inflation, deep-seated inequality, unrelenting attacks on immigrants, and the bipartisan commitment to imperialist war and genocide abroad.

In a crude attempt to buy off a fractured electorate ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, Trump dangled a transparent political bribe: a $5,000 dividend check for every adult U.S. citizen, contingent on the retention of Republican majorities in Congress. Paired with a video presentation portraying Trump as a divinely chosen caretaker sent to battle the "deep state", the economic populist posturing served as a thin veil for an agenda of unabashed corporate dominance and social devastation.

Pledges of Fealty and Open Incitement to Violence

As the convention reached its crescendo, the mask slipped entirely. Donald Trump capped off the event by commanding attendees to raise their right hands and pledge personal allegiance to him, explicitly instructing his followers to "cheat like hell" in the upcoming elections and declaring that anyone failing to vote would "go to hell". This open call for electoral fraud and the rejection of democratic processes is not an isolated aberration; it is part of a systematic, nationwide Republican campaign to purge voter rolls, suppress mail-in ballots, and disenfranchise working-class voters and immigrants.

Vice President JD Vance reinforced this reactionary worldview, leaning heavily into xenophobic tropes. Complaining that conservatives were "tired of being called racist for noticing that our country was becoming dirtier and poorer," Vance channeled the darkest currents of chauvinism, telling a protester displaying a Mexican flag to "get your ass over there".

The most chilling moment of the gathering, however, arrived during Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s address. Cruz whipped up a pogrom-like atmosphere by attacking the Democratic Party as an unholy alliance of "communists and Islamists," explicitly targeting figures like New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other progressive nominees. As Cruz named these targets, a man in the audience repeatedly screamed, "He should be shot!" Cruz did not acknowledge, let alone condemn, these explicit death threats, and later disseminated video of the speech featuring the unedited calls for political assassination.

The corporate media’s muted response to these open calls for violence and dictatorial rule—relegating them to the background or ignoring them altogether—demonstrates how comfortably the broader capitalist establishment accommodates far-right reaction.

The Democratic Party: No Alternative to Fascism and War

For working people, socialists, anti-imperialists, and anti-zionists, analyzing the grotesque spectacle in Dallas cannot lead to the false conclusion that the Democratic Party offers a progressive alternative. The Democratic Party is an indispensable pillar of the corporate-financial oligarchy, sharing fundamental class interests with the Republicans.

While the GOP relies on overt demagogy, white supremacy, and Christian nationalist rhetoric, the Democrats utilize identity politics and liberal phrasing to mask an equally ruthless agenda of militarism, corporate pillage, and austerity. It is the Democratic Party—under the current administration and its predecessors—that has funded and facilitated the catastrophic genocide in Gaza, expanded illegal and bloody proxy wars, accelerated the militarization of the borders, and preserved the domestic economic structures that enrich billionaires while impoverishing the working class.

To look to the Democratic Party to defend democratic rights or stop the slide toward fascism is a fatal political trap. The Democrats are structurally incapable of fighting fascism because fascism is born out of the crisis of the capitalist system itself—a system that both big-business parties exist to protect. Whenever capitalism faces insurmountable economic stagnation, insurmountable social crisis, and growing resistance from below, the ruling class turns to far-right reaction to crush the working class and safeguard private profit.

The Dallas convention is a stark reminder of what is at stake. The drift toward authoritarianism and political violence in the United States is part of an international phenomenon, mirroring the rise of the far-right globally from Europe to the Americas.

True opposition to fascism cannot be found within the ballot box choices offered by the two-party capitalist monopoly. It requires the independent mobilization of the international working class. For socialists, anti-imperialists, and anti-capitalists, the urgent task is the building of a revolutionary socialist movement—one that fights not merely against individual demagogues, but against the root cause of reaction: the capitalist system itself.
