Capitalism's Final Frontier: Settler-Colonial Projects, Class Warfare, and The Political Economy of Modern Empire

The global capitalist apparatus is facing an unprecedented crisis of legitimacy and structural overextension. From the devastated urban landscapes of Gaza to the austerity-wracked cities of the Western core, the interconnected machinery of imperialism, military-industrial extraction, and settler-colonial violence is operating at full capacity to preserve a rapidly decaying unipolar order. To understand the current historical juncture, socialists, anti-Zionists, and anti-imperialists must reject the liberal framing of international relations as a mere series of isolated diplomatic missteps or foreign policy blunders. Instead, we must apply a rigorous political economy analysis that links the survival of modern capitalism directly to military expansion, resource extraction, and the violent suppression of national liberation movements.

The Political Economy of Modern Empire and Resource Control

At its core, imperialism is not an ideological choice made by individual politicians; it is the structural imperative of capital to continuously expand, capture new markets, and secure raw materials. As corporate profit margins compress in domestic markets, the military machine functions as both a guarantor of overseas capital accumulation and a lucrative engine for private profit. Sovereign nations that resist integration into the Western financial system—whether by maintaining state control over natural resources, pursuing independent trade networks, or defying foreign military bases—are systematically targeted for regime change, economic sanctions, or direct military aggression.

This economic logic underpins the ideological and material support provided by Western imperial powers to regional outposts across the globe. As political analyst Garland Nixon frequently emphasizes, the imperial core views the nations of the Global South not as sovereign entities, but as resource bases and strategic assets meant to be managed and exploited to subsidize the falling rate of profit in the West. Military expansion is the heavy arm of this global trade strategy, ensuring that supply chains, energy corridors, and financial clearinghouses remain firmly under the hegemony of Western finance capital.

Settler-Colonial Projects and National Liberation Struggles

The enforcement of this global economic order relies heavily on regional client states and settler-colonial outposts designed to project Western military power into critical geopolitical corridors. Settler-colonialism functions as a primary instrument of imperial strategy: a violent project designed to displace indigenous populations, seize land, and erect an militarized apparatus to secure regional dominance.

Nowhere is this clearer than in the Middle East, where the project of Zionism has long served as a forward operating base for Western geopolitical interests. Far from being a localized ethnic or religious dispute, the national liberation struggle in Palestine represents a frontline conflict against global imperialism. Reporting and commentary from outlets like the Palestine Chronicle continuously highlight how the ongoing struggle for Palestinian liberation is intrinsically tied to the broader fight against global hegemony, exposing how Western arms manufacturers and state apparatuses use the occupation as a testing ground for surveillance technology, urban warfare techniques, and counter-insurgency doctrine.

Moreover, the resilience of national liberation movements demonstrates the limits of military force. Renowned political scientist Professor Robert Pape has demonstrated through extensive empirical research that foreign military occupation consistently serves as the primary driver of organized political and military resistance, rather than abstract ideology. When indigenous populations are subjected to systematic displacement and foreign military rule, resistance becomes an inevitable structural response. National liberation struggles are thus the natural counter-force to imperial expansion, seeking to reclaim sovereignty over land, labor, and resources.

Western Media Complicity and Manufactured Consent

To sustain this system of global extraction and military intervention, the imperial core relies on a sophisticated propaganda network to manufacture consent among its domestic populations. Corporate media outlets operate not as neutral observers, but as active ideological arms of the imperial state, utilizing calculated language to sanitize settler-colonial violence, invert victim and aggressor, and delegitimize anti-colonial resistance movements.

Former CIA analyst Ray McGovern has repeatedly drawn attention to the role of the mainstream media and intelligence agencies—what he terms the "MICIMATT" (Military-Industrial-Congressional-Intelligence-Media-Academia-Think-Tank complex)—in coordinating narratives that justify endless war and military spending. By controlling the flow of information, the corporate press ensures that the true material drivers of war—corporate profits, strategic trade routes, and resource dominance—remain hidden behind moralistic rhetoric about "defending democracy" and "human rights."

The Direct Link to Domestic Working-Class Exploitation

For the working class within the imperial core, the war machine is not a distant abstraction; it is a direct driver of domestic impoverishment. Every dollar funneled into military contractors, weapons manufacturing, and foreign military aid represents a direct transfer of wealth from public infrastructure, healthcare, housing, and education into the pockets of the ruling class.

The principle of "No War but Class War" exposes this fundamental truth: the same ruling class that profits from the destruction and displacement of communities abroad is actively waging class warfare against working-class communities at home. Austerity measures, crumbling public services, stagnant wages, and union-busting are the domestic realities of a state apparatus that prioritizes imperial aggression over human needs. Anti-imperialism is therefore not an exercise in foreign policy analysis; it is a vital necessity for domestic class struggle. The working class in the West cannot free itself while its labor is extracted to fund the subjugation of workers and peasants in the Global South.

Western Decline, Multi-Polarity, and the Socialist Response

We are currently witnessing the terminal decline of Western unipolar dominance. The aggressive use of unilateral sanctions, economic blockades, and military interventions has accelerated the formation of alternative geopolitical and economic alliances across the Global South.

As Iranian academic Professor Mohammad Marandi has repeatedly noted, the unyielding arrogance and military overreach of the Western core have inadvertently pushed nations across Eurasia, Latin America, and Africa toward de-dollarization and regional integration. The emerging multi-polar world order reflects a profound shift in global power, as the historical monopolies of Western capital are challenged by new trade architecture and strategic partnerships.

However, for socialists and anti-imperialists, multi-polarity is not the final end goal; it is a tactical shift in the terrain of global class struggle. While a multi-polar world weakens the singular, unchecked hegemony of Western capital and opens up crucial room for national sovereignty, true liberation requires moving beyond mere capitalist multipolarity toward a global socialist framework.

The task for anti-imperialists today is clear:

  1. Build Cross-Border Solidarity: Connect local labor and community struggles directly to international anti-imperialist and anti-colonial movements.

  2. Expose Propaganda: Unmask the corporate media's role in legitimizing settler-colonialism, resource theft, and foreign interventions.

  3. Disrupt the Imperial Machine: Organize against the military-industrial complex within the imperial core by opposing military spending, arms transfers, and foreign bases.

Capitalism's final frontier is defined by its desperate attempt to maintain control over a world in revolt. By forging an unyielding alliance between domestic class struggles and international national liberation movements, the global working class can dismantle the machinery of empire and build a socialist future rooted in genuine sovereignty, justice, and peace.
