AOC, Mamdani, and Progressives Will Have Blood on Their Hands: The Working Class Must Hold Progressives Accountable for the Decisions of Speaker Hakeem Jeffries

The political bankruptcy of the American progressive movement is no longer a matter of tactical debate or internal party disagreements. It is an established, undeniable reality. Following the Democratic Party's sweeping midterm victories, figures like Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), New York Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani, and other Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)-aligned progressives have lined up to pledge their allegiance and support to Representative Hakeem Jeffries as the incoming Speaker of the House.

By endorsing Jeffries, self-proclaimed "radicals," "socialists," and anti-imperialists have committed an act of political betrayal that cannot be sanitized. Hakeem Jeffries is not an ally of the working class; he is an arch-Zionist, a top recipient of corporate and special-interest PAC money, and a political operator who actively denies the ongoing genocide in Gaza. By legitimizing his leadership, AOC, Mamdani, and elected progressives will have direct blood on their hands. The working class must refuse to play along with this charade and hold these self-appointed "left-wing" leaders strictly accountable for every bomb, every austerity measure, and every anti-worker bill Speaker Jeffries passes into law.

The Grotesque Irony of the "Pro-Palestine" Progressive

For years, elected progressives have built their national profiles on righteous rhetoric against the apartheid state of Israel, weeping on social media over imperialist atrocities and calling for a free Palestine. Yet, when faced with a fundamental test of political power, their convictions evaporate into thin air. Supporting Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker exposes the total fraudulence of their anti-imperialist posturing.

Jeffries is the undisputed champion of the imperialist baseline. He has routinely rejected the characterization of Israel's campaign in Gaza as a genocide or ethnic cleansing, choosing instead to champion uninterrupted weapons flows and unqualified military support to Tel Aviv. Campaign finance records show Jeffries is among the largest recipients of funding from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and its affiliated super PACs, drawing millions to ensure that Capitol Hill remains completely compliant with U.S. geopolitical hegemony and Israeli aggression.

Yet, progressives like AOC and Mamdani turn around and offer him their enthusiasm and endorsement. To claim to stand with Palestinian liberation while elevating AIPAC’s prized politician to the third most powerful post in the United States government is a grotesque, cynical contradiction. It demonstrates that for the progressive caucus, anti-imperialism is merely an aesthetic brand meant to capture youth votes, discarded the moment it threatens their access to Democratic Party power.

Protegé of Pelosi: The Continuity of Capital and War

Hakeem Jeffries did not materialise from a vacuum; he is the handpicked protege of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. His political ideology, strategic instincts, and policy stances are direct inheritances from Pelosi’s decades-long reign over the corporate establishment. As detailed in historical coverage by the World Socialist Web Site, Pelosi's career was built on subordinating working-class needs to Wall Street, underwriting record military budgets, and enforcing party discipline to ruthlessly suppress genuine left-wing dissent.

Jeffries operates from the exact same playbook. From protecting defense contractor profits to defending corporate healthcare empires, Jeffries' priority is the preservation of American imperialism and capitalist exploitation. When progressives support Speaker Jeffries, they are not voting for a new chapter; they are voting for the continuation of Pelosiism—a regime of perpetual war abroad and class war at home.

Thrown Under the Bus, Only to Ask for More

What makes the capitulation of AOC, Mamdani, and their DSA colleagues even more pathetic is that Jeffries has repeatedly thrown them under the bus. Throughout his tenure in Democratic leadership, Jeffries has openly disparaged the progressive wing, routinely downplayed accountability measures, and met with figures deeply hostile to working-class interests—such as his high-profile meeting with Jared Kushner highlighted by The Guardian.

When progressives face primary challenges or corporate attacks, Jeffries routinely sides with moderate, anti-labor, and pro-AIPAC candidates. Even when local leftists face public backlash, as reported by The Hill regarding Mamdani’s defend-and-deflect routines surrounding establishment maneuvers, progressives respond not with defiance, but with subservience. Jeffries punches left at every opportunity, yet progressives crawl back to endorse him for Speaker. This self-abasement proves that the Democratic establishment does not need to respect the progressive caucus—they know the left will fall in line no matter how badly they are treated.

The Myth of Leverage in a Moderate Majority

The defensive lie often peddled by progressive commentators is that supporting Jeffries is a "tactical necessity" to secure leverage or gain committee appointments. This argument is fundamentally absurd. With Democrats securing a commanding majority of over 250 House seats in the midterms—dominated largely by corporate, center-right Democrats—elected progressives possess zero legislative leverage.

Speaker Jeffries does not need a single vote from the DSA caucus to pass legislation, approve military aid packages, or enforce party discipline. He can comfortably form coalitions with corporate Democrats and moderate Republicans on any major vote. The idea that progressives can "push Jeffries to the left" is a political fantasy. They have surrendered their only real power—the power to withhold their votes and block establishment leadership—in exchange for empty promises and ceremonial seats on oversight committees.

The "Blue Wave" Will Deliver Nothing to Workers

The political establishment celebrates the Democratic midterm "Blue Wave" as a victory for the American people, but history tells us otherwise. As highlighted in analysis by Left Voice, electoral sweeps by the Democratic establishment offer no tangible benefits to the working class. Neither Jeffries nor the broader Democratic leadership has any track record or interest in passing structural, anti-capitalist reforms.

Under Speaker Jeffries, the working class can expect:

  • Unprecedented War Spending: Billions of dollars will continue flowing to fund foreign interventions, missile systems, and imperial proxy conflicts, prioritizing defense contractors over human needs.

  • Austerity and Anti-Worker Policies: Enforced fiscal restraint that starves public services, ignores federal minimum wage increases, and protects corporate tax loopholes.

  • Suppression of Labor Action: Active intervention to block strikes in key infrastructure sectors, just as the party has done historically when corporate supply chains are threatened.

Progressives who urged voters to elect Democrats to "save democracy" will now sit back as Speaker Jeffries uses his mandate to enforce corporate austerity and fund genocide.

The Illusion of the "Radical" Insider

The trajectory of AOC and Mamdani offers a stark lesson on the uselessness of electing so-called "radicals" inside a capitalist, imperialist party structure. Once inside the halls of Congress, every single progressive candidate who promised to "disrupt the system from within" ends up acting exactly like a standard corporate Democrat.

They adopt the same sanitized language, vote for the same bloated military budgets, and line up behind the same pro-war leaders. They become an establishment shield, using their activist credibility to sanitize the crimes of the ruling class. The electoral strategy of using the Democratic Party as a vehicle for socialism or anti-imperialism has reached its inevitable dead end.

Holding Progressives Accountable for the Blood on Their Hands

As Speaker Jeffries inevitably passes reactionary, pro-imperialist, and anti-worker legislation, progressive voters must not allow AOC, Mamdani, or the DSA to wash their hands of the consequences. Every time Speaker Jeffries authorizes another shipment of bombs to rain down on Palestinian families, every time he blocks single-payer healthcare or a living wage bill, every time he prioritizes Wall Street over the working class, progressives must answer one simple question: Why did you vote to put this man in power?

The working class cannot afford any more illusions in the Democratic Party or its progressive left wing. True anti-imperialism and class struggle will never come from the floor of the House of Representatives under Speaker Hakeem Jeffries. It can only come from an independent, militant movement of the working class that breaks completely with the two-party capitalist system and holds every enabler of empire accountable for their betrayals.
